Zara Devlin, originally from Ireland, is one the stars of the upcoming Broadway show, Sing Street. She was apart of the show at the New York Theatre Workshop, and now is taking the role to Broadway (soon). I had the chance to ask her about Sing Street, fashion, Ireland, and other things.
How and when did you get into theatre? Was Broadway always something that you were interested in?
I went to drama school in Dublin when I was 18 and it was during that time that I truly fell in love with theatre. It was hugely challenging and one of the greatest experiences of my life.
I honestly didn’t think my career would go as far as Broadway, even in my dreams. Ireland and Broadway always seemed like two different worlds. The fact that Sing Street is a musical set in Dublin makes me very proud! How did you get started in the professional world of acting/theatre?
With the help of some wonderful people in the industry who saw something in me and gave me a chance, and I will never forget them for it!
In my final year of drama school I auditioned for a production at the Abbey Theater in Dublin ( Ireland’s National theater) I got the part and I’ve been extremely lucky every since Were you a fan of the movie, Sing Street, before booking the role? Did you take any inspiration from the movie, or did you really want to just make the role your own?
A big fan yes, I had watched it long before I heard they were doing a musical of it. It’s a stunning movie.
I guess I went back to it to help with the over all feeling but In terms of character I wanted to try my hardest to find my own instincts.
What’s been the best part of being involved with Sing Street so far? What do you look forward to most?
Everything about it is the best part. Working with the amazing cast and creative team, it’s very special and rare to have a team like it. The production, the text, the music, the choreography. I constantly had chills. Being in New York of course. I came to New York for the first time for Sing Street, it blew my mind every day.
I look forward to getting to do Sing Street on Broadway and seeing what people think of it.
You’re from Ireland, I’ve never been, but I’m assuming it’s very different from New York in many aspects. How is the fashion different? In what ways has it influenced you? (Fashion or other ways)
Ireland and Newyork are very similar in ways but very different in others. Fashion definitely. I used to be afraid to express myself at home, It was already weird that I liked acting! everyone dresses quite similarly here. I’m not judging though.
Dublin is different. When I moved to Dublin I felt way more comfortable expressing myself. I could wear buckets for shoes and no one would bat an eye lid. It was the first time I really felt free to do and wear what I wanted. I find Dublin and East village quite similar actually.
Lastly, how are you doing during these crazy times?
I’m doing good Thankyou. Sometimes I find it hard to keep myself motivated, then I remind myself that we are all going through this together and we are all trying our hardest to adjust to this strange time. I hope you’re doing well!
